What is an IPL Photofacial?

IPL photofacial treatments use pulses of broadband light to address pigmentation issues in the skin. The light is absorbed by discolored skin cells and is destroyed as a result. Then, the body replaces the discolored skin with healthy, radiant skin. IPL photofacials can be used as a skin discoloration treatment, skin pigmentation treatment, and rosacea treatment. It can also be used to address large pores and rough skin texture. At Layton Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, we use the Inmode Lumecca system for IPL treatments. These treatments can be performed on the face, neck, arms, and hands.

What is the IPL Photofacial Treatment Like?

Before your treatment, Dr. Layton will provide you with a custom brightening cream to use for about one month before your procedure. You should also stay out of the sun for about two weeks prior to treatment. The treatment isn’t painful, as our IPL device has a built-in cooling tip to make the procedure more comfortable. It also has a fast pulse mode so that the treatment can be performed significantly faster than standard IPL treatments.

Is There Downtime After an IPL Photofacial?

There is no downtime with IPL but patients can expect redness on the day of treatment and pigmentation to become darker the first few days following the treatment. These spots can be covered with make-up but should not be picked at or scratched off. They need to fade on their own, which usually happens in less than two weeks.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from My IPL Photofacial?

Patients will begin to notice results from their IPL photofacial within just a few weeks of treatment. These results will continue to improve over the following weeks and with further treatments. The IPL laser technology used at Layton Aesthetic Plastic Surgery requires as little as one treatment to achieve the same results that you would achieve with multiple treatments at another office. However, we may recommend a series of up to three treatments for optimal results.
