What is a Facelift?

A facelift, also called a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that targets the cheeks, jowls, and neck to improve visible signs of aging in the face. The procedure can also treat excess skin or fat under the chin and jaw. As people age, their skin, muscle, and soft tissue all lose elasticity. A facelift can turn the clock back by tightening and repositioning the lax tissues. Treatments that do not target all three of these tissues will not be as effective as facelift surgery. Facelifts have been a staple of the cosmetic industry for a long time with an excellent safety and efficacy profile.

Dr. Layton is proud to specialize in the facelift procedure and is able to offer this as an in-office procedure with the use of local anesthesia. Facelift procedures usually require general anesthesia and are performed in a surgical facility. With Dr. Layton’s technique, patients in Houston can accelerate their treatment time and reduce the cost of treatment. We offer both traditional and mini facelifts to help patients achieve their cosmetic goals.

What is a Mini Facelift?

A mini facelift is a less-invasive facelift procedure that targets signs of aging in the lower face. These operations treat just the neck and jawline, as opposed to the entire face. This can be a great solution for patients who are looking to achieve more subtle results or do not want the downtime associated with a full facelift. As a less invasive technique, the mini facelift requires fewer and smaller incisions and will have a shorter recovery period.

To maximize outcomes, some patients receiving a mini facelift combine it with dermal fillers or other minimally invasive procedures like Botox. A patient might also choose to receive an eye or brow lift alongside a mini facelift.

A seasoned physician in Houston can assess a prospective patient’s situation to determine whether a full or mini facelift, or another combination of procedures, is best for the circumstances.

How Much Does a Facelift Cost?

The cost of a facelift can vary depending on the extent of treatment necessary to produce the desired results. A full facelift typically ranges from $13,900 to $14,800, while a mini facelift ranges from $8,800 to $9,000. During your consultation, Dr. Layton will be able to provide you with a treatment plan that matches your specific needs. At this point, we will be able to provide you with the exact cost of your treatment. Our Houston clinic also offers financing services to help make facelifts and other treatments more affordable.

The Basics of a Facelift Procedure

To begin the surgery for both facelifts and mini facelifts, a surgeon will put the patient under general anesthesia.  During the operation, incisions are made in the hairline and around the ears, where they will be well-hidden. Through these incisions, excess skin is removed to eliminate wrinkles and sagging skin. Underlying muscle and tissue are tightened and repositioned. The surgeon places internal stitches that will dissolve on their own. Then, the remaining skin will be re-draped to produce a firmer, more youthful appearance. The incisions will be sutured and will be in place for approximately two weeks after the procedure.

What Can I Expect After a Facelift?

Patients will need a ride home from their surgery and plan on one full day in bed.  It could be helpful to have someone stay for the first night. Some people might require more extended bed rest. Most patients will be okay moving around the house within 48 hours but should not engage in any more activity than that for the first 72 hours. Patients should see their surgeon within the first week for a follow-up to check incisions and swelling.

Pain is minimal with a facelift and swelling or bruising are generally minor. Most residents undergoing a facelift take a week or longer off work and other activities while recovering from surgery. Most patients take pain medication the first day or two following surgery and then rely on Motrin or Advil thereafter. We recommend that our patients take Arnica Montana (vitamin K) two days prior to surgery and one week following surgery to help with swelling. Most patients experience very little bruising after a facelift. A compression facial wrap is worn at all times for the first week following surgery. The facial compression garment is only worn at night during the second- week post-surgery. After one month, most patients return to normal activities, but some minor swelling, usually unnoticeable, may stick around for several months to a year.

Dr. Layton can further explain the recovery period associated with a facelift, to help a patient in Houston decide whether it is right for them.

How Long Will Results Last?

In general, patients can expect their face to appear ten to 15 years younger after their facelift surgery, with results lasting a similar amount of time. Additionally, the clinic offers various other procedures, such as Botox or fillers, in addition to the surgery, that can enhance and extend the life of a facelift. Furthermore, Dr. Layton will be sure to perform a facelift with care, to make sure a Houston patient sees results for as long as possible.
